Why travel Laos with us

Laos rewards a slower schedule more than any other country on this site, and the routes below are built with that in mind: fewer stops packed into each day, and real time given to the river itself rather than treating it as scenery glimpsed from a bus window. Watching the morning alms round in Luang Prabang, spending two days on the slow boat down from Huay Xai, or reaching the far south to Si Phan Don’s islands all need unhurried days to be worth doing at all.

These trips suit repeat visitors to the region, honeymooners after somewhere quieter than Vietnam or Thailand, and smaller groups who would rather have a guide with time to actually answer questions than one rushing to the next stop on a fixed itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Which Laos trip suits a first visit best?
The 5-day Luang Prabang and Vientiane tour covers both the country’s cultural anchor and its capital without needing two weeks. If you only have time for one place, the 4-day Luang Prabang Explorer stands well on its own.
Will two straight days on the river feel like too much?
Only if you go in wanting to arrive quickly rather than watch the country pass. The public boats have basic bench seating; the ones we book carry proper seats for the crossing, and stopping overnight at Pakbeng splits the trip into two easier stretches instead of one long one.
Can I see Irrawaddy dolphins on the Pakse, Champasak and Si Phan Don trip?
No. The Si Phan Don dolphin population died out locally in February 2022, so that stop is no longer part of any honest itinerary. Kratie, across the border in Cambodia, is where a genuine sighting is still possible.
How do these routes connect with Vietnam or Cambodia?
Most naturally through Cambodia and onward to Vietnam by river, or by flight from Vientiane or Luang Prabang. Our [Mekong river journeys](mekong/tours) page has multi-country routes built specifically around those connections.
What is the best season for the Xieng Khuang and Plain of Jars route?
November to April, the dry season, when mountain roads in the north are at their most reliable. The wet season, roughly May to October, can slow overland travel considerably in that part of the country.
